IDIVAL took part in the JA-SAFE kick-off meeting: a new European joint action for a healthier future

The Valdecilla Health Research Institute (IDIVAL) participated in the launch meeting of the Joint Action for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (JA-SAFE), which was officially initiated in Athens on November 3rd, 4th, and 5th, with the aim of reducing the growing burden posed by non-communicable diseases, including cancer, across Europe.

Over the coming four years, IDIVAL and The Cantabrian Health Service will participate in this Joint Action which involves 23 European countries and 62 institutions. This initiative will work to advance smoke- and aerosol-free environments, prevent alcohol-related harm, and promote health through policy, research, and collaboration. Together, we contribute to the EU’s vision of a tobacco-free generation and healthier, more equitable societies.

Tobacco and alcohol remain two of the leading preventable causes of disease and premature death in Europe. Every year, they are responsible for millions of avoidable illnesses, cancers, and lost lives – with profound social and economic impacts. JA-SAFE aims to bridge science, policy, and practice, helping Member States implement effective prevention measures and close the gap between evidence and action.

By fostering stronger cooperation among governments, research institutes, and civil society, JA-SAFE enhances Europe’s capacity to promote health, prevent harm, and safeguard future generations. This joint action represents a united European effort to reduce inequalities, empower communities, and make healthy choices the easier choices for all.
