Specialists from Valdecilla’s Digestive Diseases Department participate in a European initiative to improve training in diagnostic colonoscopy

Álvaro Terán and María Moris, endoscopists from the Digestive Diseases Department of the Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla (HUMV) and researchers at the Instituto de Investigación Marqués de Valdecilla (IDIVAL), participated on 4 and 5 September in a training meeting held in Warsaw (Poland), as part of the European Joint Action EUCanScreen.

The activity took place within Work Package 11 (WP11), dedicated to strengthening professional capacities in European cancer screening programmes, and specifically Task 11.3, focused on training and quality assessment in colonoscopy.

The meeting was linked to the international Train the Colonoscopy Trainer (TCT) course, an initiative aimed at digestive endoscopy specialists involved in training other professionals, with the goal of improving their teaching skills and promoting common standards in colonoscopy training across Europe.

Improving the quality of colonoscopy to advance colorectal cancer prevention

Colonoscopy plays a key role in colorectal cancer screening programmes, as it allows precancerous lesions to be identified and removed, while also facilitating the diagnosis of tumours at an early stage.

The quality of this examination depends largely on the training and experience of the professionals who perform it. Therefore, ensuring appropriate training is essential to improve lesion detection and maximise the preventive effectiveness of screening programmes.

In this context, the Train the Colonoscopy Trainer programme focuses on training trainers, providing them with teaching and methodological tools through a practical and interactive approach aimed at improving the teaching of the technique during endoscopic procedures and promoting shared quality standards across different European healthcare systems.

IDIVAL’s participation in EUCanScreen

This meeting strengthens IDIVAL’s participation in EUCanScreen through the Medical Oncology and Digestive Diseases Departments of HUMV, as well as its collaboration with other European centres on initiatives aimed at improving the quality of early cancer detection programmes.

EUCanScreen is a Joint Action that brings together healthcare and research institutions from different European countries to advance the implementation of more effective, accessible and sustainable screening programmes.

IDIVAL’s participation in this project promotes the exchange of knowledge and experience with professionals from other healthcare systems, contributing to the development of skills and the incorporation of quality standards in the field of digestive endoscopy and colorectal cancer prevention.

The EUCanScreen project (Grant Agreement 101162959) is co-funded by the European Union through the EU4Health programme.
