The Marqués de Valdecilla Health Research Institute (IDIVAL), through its Nursing Research Group, is launching this Wednesday, December 3, the second edition of the free online courses of the European JACARDI project, an initiative aimed at improving cardiovascular health and diabetes among the population of Cantabria. The training, open to all citizens, will run for seven weeks, until January 21.
Following the success of the first edition—which involved around 200 participants—IDIVAL expects similar or even greater engagement. The content has been updated and adapted based on the experience of the previous course, strengthening its practical usefulness for both healthy participants and those with a diagnosis.
IDIVAL encourages citizens to enroll in these free courses, which aim for at least another 200 people to complete the training. Participation will contribute to advancing applied research and improving the prevention and management of diseases with enormous societal impact.
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Europe, and diabetes has risen significantly over the past decade. In Cantabria, 28% of deaths are related to cardiovascular conditions. However, up to 80% of these problems could be prevented through healthy lifestyle habits—highlighting the importance of training initiatives such as JACARDI.
Two training pathways to reach the entire population
As in the first edition, the JACARDI training offer includes two distinct courses, both designed to be easily followed from any device:
1. Course for the general population
- Cardiovascular health
- Healthy eating
- Physical activity
- Emotional well-being
- Prevention of harmful habits
- Early risk detection
2. Course for patients
Designed for individuals with:
- Diabetes mellitus

Each week, a new module will be released with theoretical and practical materials supervised by professionals from the Cantabrian Health Service and the University of Cantabria.
JACARDI is a European joint action involving 21 participating countries, more than 300 experts, and 76 partner organizations. The European Commission has allocated 53 million euros to develop new strategies for the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
In Cantabria, the project has been implemented since 2023 through three pilot initiatives, in collaboration with entities such as the Adult Education Centers of Santander, Camargo, and Los Corrales de Buelna; COCEMFE Cantabria; the Cantabrian School of Health; Movimiento por la Paz; Plataforma Romanes; Fundación Secretariado Gitano; and COHORTE Cantabria.
In addition, JACARDI promotes an inclusive, equitable, and culturally sensitive approach, incorporating a gender perspective in public health and fostering active community participation.
