The team from Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital (HUMV) and the Valdecilla Health Research Institute (IDIVAL) has contributed over the past year to European training and clinical discussion activities in digestive endoscopy, culminating in the participation of Álvaro Terán as a speaker and mentor in the course held at the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto.
Both institutions are strengthening their international projection through their involvement in the training activities of the European initiative EUCanScreen, aimed at improving equity, quality, and diagnostic capacity in cancer screening and early detection programmes across Europe.
Over the past year, professionals from Valdecilla’s Gastroenterology Service have actively collaborated in various actions within the European initiative, including participation in meetings, exchange of clinical experience, and submission of cases for discussion in international training settings. In this context, the involvement of Álvaro Terán and Miguel Fraile stands out, as their contribution has helped reinforce Valdecilla’s presence in a European network focused on improving endoscopic practice and the early detection of digestive cancers.
One of the most recent milestones of this participation was the course “Course on Upper GI Endoscopy: How to Improve Your Cancer Detection Rate”, held at the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto (IPO-Porto). The activity brought together 23 participants from 12 countries and established itself as a specialised forum for the exchange of knowledge in upper digestive endoscopy.
Representing Valdecilla, Álvaro Terán, specialist in the HUMV Gastroenterology Service and IDIVAL researcher, took part as a speaker and mentor within the course’s international faculty.
Throughout the sessions, participants worked on clinical cases, diagnostic improvement strategies, and procedures aimed at optimising cancer detection rates in digestive endoscopy.
The contribution of the HUMV Gastroenterology Service to EUCanScreen reflects the commitment of Valdecilla and IDIVAL to international cooperation, advanced medical training, and the continuous improvement of European standards in early cancer diagnosis. Participation in this type of activity enables the sharing of clinical experience, the strengthening of professional networks, and the transfer of specialised knowledge to European initiatives with a direct impact on care quality.
