Valdecilla is already a centre of knowledge generation and socio-economic tractor for our region. The Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital and its Institute for Health Research, IDIVAL, are working to become one of the benchmarks in research, transfer and co-generation of wealth in our region. In 2014 IDIVAL was established as a foundation and reshaped its organisational structure.

In March 2015 IDIVAL was accredited by the Carlos III Health Institute and reaccredited in 2020 as a Health Research Institute, and is currently one of the 32 accredited Health Research Institutes in our country.

IDIVAL has its own building located in the upper part of the Valdecilla estate. This building has around 3000 m2 of research space dedicated to laboratories and general services. It also has spaces in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cantabria and in the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital. Specifically, the Clinical Trials Unit located at the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital is a benchmark in clinical research in our region. IDIVAL’s current commitment, together with its professionals, is to promote talent, internationalisation and thus enhance the capabilities of the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital as a leading healthcare centre with a great capacity to boost the socio-economic dynamism of our region.
